Mexican port seeks greater slice of US,
Asia Trade Pie
GUAYMAS Port is being regarded as a "serious" target for the development
of international trade between Mexico, the United States and Asia.
Authorities in Mexico feel the port has the potential to accept
"overflow" cargo from ports in the Los Angeles / Long Beach area,
whereas US counterparts in Arizona are said to view Guaymas as a "new
point for transshipping cargo for the maquiladoras and for the
southwestern United States markets", according to a statement issued on
behalf of Aeroceanetwork members.
This opinion is based on Guaymas' geographical location given that it is
situated approximately 354 kilometres south of Nogales, Arizona, a major
border crossing point for cargo.
The release said that Mexican forwarders have differing opinions on
whether Guaymas will compete with Manzanillo for Asian trade.
"I don't think that Guaymas will take volume from Manzanillo," said
Edgar Calderon, managing director of the Guadalajara based TRC Cargo
Internacional, an Aeroceanetwork member in Mexico, "Remember that
Manzanillo is basically in the centre of Mexico and all the cargo goes
and comes from this area. Guaymas will be for the factories located in
the North of Mexico so this will be a different market."
Others such as Nicolas Medina Trujillo, CEO of Mexico City based Aire
Mar Logistics, believe that current congestion in Mexican ports can be a
catalyst for cargo volumes moving towards Guaymas in the future.
"Manzanillo is our gateway for the Far East, but as other ports in
Mexico are becoming too small to handle the container traffic increases
... Guaymas could take some of the traffic from Manzanillo."
